Growing up with stories of India’s own fight for independence

My support for the Palestinian people stems from our shared history of colonial oppression,” said Adnan Shaikh, an engineering student. “In an age where information is at our fingertips, seeing the war on our screens is both shocking and disturbing.”

Rihana Ansari and Bibi Fatima, who live in Indira Nagar, said, “We have been seeing visuals on social media. It has been heart-wrenching and wrong. We live here, far away in Pune, but they are people and children the same way we are. That is enough reason to care.”

“Most of the killed were children who did not get to see their future. Seeing the dead bodies online all the time leaves you feeling helpless. That is why I am here,” said 28-year-old Vikas Mirje who works in scientific publishing.

Abhijit M, a social activist and academic, said, “Media is trying to give the impression. That the issue of Palestine only affects Muslim people but that is absolutely not true…”

Protest in Pune called under the slogan

‘All Eyes on Rafah’, which was also used in a viral online post that was shared over 47 million times.

“Firstly there are queer people in Palestine too and I could have been in their place. Secondly, carrying out this attack in the name of women emancipation and queer liberation is against my rights as well,” said Siddhant, from Pune Queer Collective who works in customer services.

T Lalita of the Revolutionary Workers’ Party of India (RWPI), which organised the protest, said, “For us, the national question of Palestine needs urgent resolution and as an immediate step, ceasefire needs to be declared. More than 36,000 people have been killed, and 23 lakh displaced due to the Israeli invasion. The IDF has targeted civilians, schools, hospitals, refugee camps violating all norms of human rights.”
