The U.S. men’s national soccer team’s quest to build an abundance of momentum for the 2026 World Cup continues this summer with the Copa América, which will be held in the United States for the second time

The USMNT enter this summer with a lot of expectations to compete for the Copa América title, but they also have a lot of questions. The biggest question on the field is how they will replace Sergiño Dest, who will miss the rest of the year after tearing his ACL last month. They also want to show that they are not afraid of going up against South America’s best and getting a result, even a team like Colombia that enters this match on a 21-match unbeaten streak.

Soccer friendlies are largely free of consequence, untethered from continental and global competitions that end up rendering clear — and often harsh — judgment on national teams.

But friendlies such as the U.S. men’s national team clash with Colombia on Saturday at Commanders Field in Landover are also bellwethers. And as these friendlies might portend performance at Copa América, Copa América, in turn, promises to reveal early signs of what to expect from the U.S. team at the 2026 World Cup on home ground.

The USMNT’s Copa América group stage opener is on Sunday, June 23 against Bolivia at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, regular home of the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys. Colombia’s Copa América group stage opener is on Monday, June 24 against Paraguay at NRG Stadium in Houston, regular home of the NFL’s Houston Texans.

The United States are set to host an expanded Copa America later this month, but before then they have two more friendlies to play.

The first is Saturday is against Colombia in Landover, Maryland. The Americans are coming off another CONCACAF Nations League title in March and they now look to succeed in another tournament on home soil.

As for the Colombians, they are red-hot as they’ve not lost a match since February 2022. The Cafeteros are a dark horse to win this summer’s tournament, and a victory over the USA in this match would help maintain their momentum.
