Israel’s war on Gaza live: Death toll from attacks on Nuseirat rises to 210
Gaza’s Government Media Office says the “Israeli massacre” at the Nuseirat refugee camp has killed 210 Palestinians and wounded more than 400.
Israeli forces rescued four captives in the attack at Nuseirat refugee camp, with one of its officers dying during the operation.
On March 6, Ayman Shaer found himself lying on the ground in the ancient square of Sebastia, bleeding and in unbearable pain.
“The soldiers were shooting people next to the ruins, and one of the bullets hit my leg as I ran,” the 27-year-old said.
“It entered my thigh … The whole bone was destroyed. I thought I was dead. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
“The pain was indescribable.”
He lay near the remains of Sebastia’s Hellenistic acropolis, the “butterfly bullet” Israeli soldiers had shot him with expanding in his leg as it is designed to do.
“I saw death,” Ayman’s father, Raed Shaer, 53, said as he recalled his son’s shooting, which happened a few hundred metres (a few hundred yards) from the family home in Sebastia in the northern occupied West Bank.
Colombian President Gustavo Petro has announced that his government will suspend coal exports to Israel while it continues its war in the Gaza Strip.
“We are going to suspend coal exports to Israel until the genocide stops,” he wrote on X.
In May, Petro, who describes Israel’s war in Gaza as “genocidal”, announced Colombia would sever ties with Israel over the conflict.
Orit Meir, the mother of Almog Meir Jan, an Israeli captive who was rescued this morning, says her son asked her to tell the press that they have a “strong people”, saying he wishes “all the captives will come back safe to the nation”.
“I’d like to add a big thank you to our army, to our soldiers, the great ones. Thanks a lot to our people, the great people who are still feeling high and feeling strong. I can understand the joy of everyone. Thank you very much to everyone who supported us,” Meir said at a news conference alongside the other family members of rescued captives.
Al Jazeera is reporting from outside Israel because it has been banned by the Israeli government.
This wasn’t the first time Israelis had been in central Gaza since the war started in the north, moved on to the centre and then onto the south in Rafah and then decided to go back to specific areas in central Gaza.
We are expecting a statement from the families of those held captive any moment now.
One of the parents of Noa, a captive who was rescued, spoke out earlier encouraging and urging people to join them at 8pm (17:00 GMT) in the same place they’ve gathered every Saturday, where tens of thousands of Israelis have gathered protesting for their government to take and accept any ceasefire deal. He also reminded people there are still 120 captives remaining in the Gaza Strip.
So, yes, this is a plus for Prime Minister Netanyahu, who’s been heavily criticised lately, but certainly, 120 captives are still in Gaza and the Israelis know the only real viable way to bring many people back is through a ceasefire deal with Hamas. ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern ern
