In early 2007 a small number of Muslim families living in the Camberley and Farnborough areas came together to discuss issues within our community. Recognising that many of our needs were not being met it was decided to form a community organisation that could lend a voice and work to realise these needs. Out of this was formed the Surrey Heath Muslim Association.
We work with other organisations including the local and county councils, the police, health organisations and other bodies to ensure that our needs are catered for and also to provide a conduit for them to get their own messages into the Muslim community. It is only be working together that we can ensure that Muslim community in our area can play its full and proper part in the wider community.
As an association we are a non-profit making charity and rely very much on donations and the work of our volunteers to deliver the services that we need. We are registered with the Charity Commission. Our charity number is 1126441. Our governing document describes our aims and how we run the charity.
We provide a number of services and activities covering education, fitness and burial services. We also regularly hold social gatherings including an annual summer event which are regularly attended by over 300 people each year which is open to everyone from the wider community.
Assalaam u alaikum
We hope that this reaches in the best of health and emaan.
We are pleased to announce that SHMA’s work in supporting the community during the COVID-19 pandemic was recognised by the Lord-Lieutenant of Surrey, Michael More-Molyneux. The Lord-Lieutenant is the personal representative of Her Majesty The Queen in the county. The responsibilities of the Lord-Lieutenant include arranging visits to the county by members of the Royal Family as well as assisting with the nomination of awards on behalf of The Queen. You can find out more about the Lord-Lietenant’s work on his website.
On 24th October the Surrey Heath Muslim Association was warded a Certificate of Appreciation for the work done in collecting and distributing food to vulnerable people and the homeless over the past 18 months. In addition it is also for looking out and the care provided to vulnerable people within our community during the difficult times.
Whilst this was awarded to the SHMA, the award is really a recognition of the hard work and dedications of the many volunteers in our community. So a big thank you to all of you, may Allah reward you for your kindness and compassion.
Whilst the country is slowly opening and things start returning to a form of “normal” we must continue the good work. If anyone wishes to take part in these initiatives and help out, please do contact us.
Thank you to everyone.
