UC Santa Cruz main entrance open following 16-hour standoff

The main entrance of the UC Santa Cruz campus was fully open as of late Saturday afternoon, with no demonstrations, protesters or blockades on scene. The entrance had blocked since Tuesday, when several hundred students and supporters took to the streets again to protest Israel’s ongoing war in Gaza, shutting down both entrances. More than 100 police officers from as far as Modesto, San Francisco, Sacramento and Truckee moved to disband the encampment and blockades at the main entrance overnight Thursday into Friday. A confrontation between the pro-Palestine protesters and police officers lasted 16 hours, and resulted in the arrest of at least 80 protesters and three faculty members.

A media liaison with the encampment told Lookout on Friday that students will continue to fight for divestment until they succeed: “That fight will take many forms. This brutality has only strengthened our resolve.”

Despite the absence of protesters, campus spokesperson Scott Hernandez-Jason told Lookout on Saturday that the campus community “would continue to notice a higher presence of law enforcement on campus.” He did not answer whether or not that would include officers from other jurisdictions.

Santa Cruz Police Department Deputy Chief Jon Bush did not immediately respond to a request for comment regarding whether SCPD officers would continue their campus presence.

The university has also begun issuing Section 626.4 notices following the standoff. That section of the California Penal Code gives the chief administrative officer of a campus — in this case, UCSC — or another employee designated by the chief administrative officer “the authority to exclude disruptive persons from the campus temporarily for up to 14 days.” It also states that a person who enters the campus after being excluded is guilty of a misdemeanor.
