Sweden: Mosque severly damaged by suspected arson attack

Stockholm, Sweden  (Agencies):  A mosque in south-east Sweden has been severly damaged following a suspected arson attack, according to local media.

The fire in the Arby section of the city of Eskilstuna was caused by arson, Anas Deneche, Eskilstuna Grand Mosque’s communication director, told public broadcaster SR.

Deneche says that they do not intend to give up and the mosque will be rebuilt. Until then, he urges members to be patient.

“We get to practice what we Muslims say ‘sabar’, which is patience,” he said.

The mosque is located in the Arby section of the city of Eskilstuna.

Police records show the mosque has faced threats and was subjected to physical attacks, he said, adding that they are sure that this was an arson attack.

The mosque is unusable due to the damage, according to local police.

No one was injured. The fire which was put off by firefighters dispatched from four stations.

An investigation of the incident has been launched it added.

The attack follows a series of public burnings of the Qur’an in the country in the last few months..
