By Adam Abu-bashal

ABUJA, Nigeria (AA): At least 18 people were killed in a mosque attack in Zamfara state in Nigeria, media reports said Saturday.

Armed perpetrators, who hid AK 47 rifles in their clothes and pretended to be worshippers,  opened fire on worshipers who gathered for Friday prayers in the Ruwan Jema region, according to national media.

Many injuries were also reported.

Zamfara police spokesman Muhammad Shehu did not confirm the number of deaths toll but he confirmed the attack.

Zamfara has been a scene of clashes for the last five years between Fulanis and tribes who earn their livelihoods through farming.

The state government had reported that armed gang members who were caught due to increasing security problems in the state would be tried with execution.

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari banned mining activities in the state due to security concerns.

Zamfara State Governor Bello Matawalle issued a call June 26 for residents to arm themselves to defend against armed gangs.

This attack came three weeks after terrorists attacked a Friday mosque in Zugu town in the same local government area where 45 worshippers were kidnapped.
