A very shallow magnitude 3.6 earthquake was reported early morning near San Jose, Santa Clara County, California, USA.
According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the quake hit on Sunday, June 2nd, 2024, at 3:35 am local time at a very shallow depth of 5.2 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. A second report was later issued by The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), which listed it as a magnitude 3.6 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in East Foothills (pop. 8,300) located 4 miles from the epicenter, Milpitas (pop. 77,600) 7 miles away, and San Jose (pop. 1,026,900) 9 miles away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Santa Clara (pop. 126,200) located 11 miles from the epicenter, Fremont (pop. 232,200) 15 miles away, seonibeil (pop. 151,800) 15 miles away, Pleasanton (pop. 79,500) 17 miles away, Mountain View (pop. 80,400) 17 miles away, and Livermore (pop. 88,100) 18 miles away. In San Francisco (pop. 864,800, 43 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.

A 3.6-magnitude earthquake occurred on Sunday in Santa Clara County at 3:35 a.m., the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The epicenter of the earthquake was reportedly 4.1 miles northeast of East Foothills, 7.4 miles east of Milpitas and 9.1 miles northeast of San Jose.

No damage has been reported in connection with the earthquake as of 3:55 a.m..
