Israel’s government primarily targeted Black lawmakers and progressives with this content in order to sway public opinion on the war in Gaza, Haaretz newspaper reports, citing an investigation by the Fake Reporter organisation.
The daily said the operation, orchestrated by Israel’s Diaspora Affairs Ministry and run by a political campaigning firm, involved fake accounts and sites that spread pro-Israel and Islamophobic content, as well as disinformation about anti-Semitism on US campuses.
Haaretz first reported about the existence of the operation in March but Fake Reporter published more details. Fake Reporter’s Executive Director Achiya Schatz told Haaretz that “running the foreign influence campaign against American lawmakers is amateurish, irresponsible and anti-democratic”.
Thousands of Israelis have joined a march through occupied East Jerusalem, with some attacking Palestinians and shouting racist slogans, as part of an annual demonstration marking Israel’s occupation of the city.
Footage shared by local journalists on Wednesday showed young men and teenagers chanting, “Death to the Arabs” and “May your village burn”.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan says his country will continue to stand in solidarity with “the oppressed and against the oppressor”, Anadolu news agency reports.
“It is our humanitarian duty to the Palestinian people to react to this insane situation, which puts our humanity and our faith to the test,” Erdogan said.
“Those who play deaf, dumb, and blind towards genocide today cannot erase this black mark for the rest of their lives.”
Qatar’s Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani and Egypt’s intelligence chief Abbas Kamel met Hamas members in Doha for talks on a Gaza truce, AFP reports.

Earlier, Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh said the Palestinian group sought a “comprehensive cessation of aggression” in Gaza as part of a ceasefire deal, and urged a complete Israeli withdrawal from Gaza and the exchange of Palestinian prisoners.
Qatar and Egypt have been engaged in months of negotiations over details for a truce in Gaza.
