Spotters detected a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado, moving southeast at 45 mph, and indicating “flying debris will be dangerous to those caught without shelter.” Advisories urged residents to find refuge in interior rooms on the lowest floors of sturdy buildings away from windows.

At about the same time, a Severe Thunderstorm Warning remained in effect, with radar indicating severe thunderstorms along a line stretching from Farmersville to Mesquite to Blue Mound. The warning detailed, “tennis ball size hail and 70 mph wind gusts” that were set to pound the region. These destructive elements of nature were on track to impact not only Dallas and Fort Worth but also several surrounding counties posing a threat of considerable damage to those communities with predicted “extensive tree damage and power outages.”
