My Community Day

On Sunday June 14th, we held our Annual Community Day at the Ian Goodchild Centre in Camberley.  This is the occasion when we invite people from the wider community to come and join us over some refreshments and get an insight into the Muslim Community and Islam as a whole.  As in previous years, we put on a "What is Islam" exhibition with the help of our wonderfully supportive partners over at Discover Islam which proved to be very popular with the visitors.

Once we again we had large number of people wander into the exhibition throughout the day.  While the parents looked around the displays and got their hands painted with henna, the children were kept occupied with an array of activities to keep them busy.

We were delighted to be graced by the Mayor of Surrey Heath, Joanne Potter.  The Mayor spent a good hour at the event looking around, meeting some of the many volunteers from the community whilst getting to learn a little about Islam.   In addition to the Mayor, we also had Kevin Hurley, the Crime and Police Commissioner for Surrey attend.  Kevin was accompanied by Shiraz Mirza the Assistant Police and Crime Commissioner for Surrey responsible for Equality and Diversity.  Both of whom spent most of the afternoon with everyone and getting to know the community.

One of the first to arrive was Chris Pitt, who represents Mytchett and Frimley Green on the Surrey County Council.  Chris spent a considerable amount of time meeting the many people from the community that attended the day. Charlotte Morley, Councillor for Watchetts Ward at the Surrey Heath Borough Council also dropped by during the afternoon and thanked the organisers for a worthwhile and very interesting event.

Wandering around the hall, our expert in writing Arabic text was Sheikh Ahmed Barakat who spent time creating wonderful certificates for the majority of the visitors. The visitors all seemed to love their hand-crafted certificates with the beautiful writing.  All of our special guests also took part in this activity whilst some of the kids requested additional certificates containing the names of their teacher’s! At the end, the only thing that stopped Ahmed writing more certificates was the running out of paper!

There are so many people we would like to thank for putting on this event.  But the biggest thanks must go to Brothers Gemal and Mohammad Iqbal who gave up a huge amount of time in preparing the event.  We must not forget the amazing people at Discover Islam who have supported us year after year and impart their valuable wisdom, knoweledge and expertise to help make this a success year after year.  Finally a big thank you to everyone that came along.  All in the true spiriti of #GetInvolved!

Below are some photos from the day.
